clubGEN High School Leader Position Frequently Asked Questions

What grade do I have to be in to apply for the clubgen leader position?
We accept applications from high school students who will be juniors or seniors in the coming school year.

When does the clubGEN leader position start?
Training for the position will start in August. The training is typically 3 full days of leadership and facilitation skills, team building activities, topic workshops and training on employee policies and procedures.

How will I get to the middle school job sites from my high school? Is there transportation?
GENaustin does not provide transportation. clubGEN leaders are required to have reliable transportation and are essentially responsible for getting to the work site (middle school), planning meetings and professional development workshops.

What time does the clubGEN group start and what time do I have to be there?
We ask that you are able to arrive at the middle school job site as soon as possible. If your last class ends before 4:15 we ask that you go directly to the middle school and help the adult volunteers with pre-club activities. If your high school dismisses at 4:15, you will be expected to go directly to the middle school to start club at 4:30.

My high school dismissal time is much later than the middle school; do I have to get out of class early?
No, you do not need to leave early. But you do need to be able to get there as soon as possible and by 4:30PM. Since the middle school member get out of school earlier we have some wonderful adult volunteers who spend that first hour afterschool each week with your group. The volunteers will also stay the second hour with you and your campus coordinator to support you and the clubGEN group.

What middle schools will I be working at if I am selected as a clubGEN leader?
clubGEN leadership teams are organized by the location of high school that are within a reasonable distance from the job site (middle school). The distance is usually a 5 to 8 mile radius from the high school.

How many days a week does the clubgen leader work?
Leaders are asked to work a minimum of 2 to 3 days afterschool each week, plus 1 additional day for a planning meeting with their campus coordinator.

Do I have to work on the weekends if I am selected?
We schedule 2-3 mandatory professional development trainings and workshops each semester on Saturdays. We will notify you of the dates well in advance, so that you can make arrangements for them.

How many hours a week can I work as a clubgen leader?
The clubgen leader position is up to 10 hours a week. Many of our current leaders enjoy the 10 hour position, because it allows them to have a second job in the evening or on the weekend.

What is the deadline for submitting my application?
We are accepting applications on an ongoing basis until our teams are complete; however, interviews have already begun, so we encourage you to submit an application ASAP if interested in the position.

What are my chances of being selected for the clubGEN leader position?
We receive hundreds of applications each school year and unfortunately can only select a small group of applicants that are the best match for the teams and the students they will be working with. We strongly encourage all role models and leaders to apply, recognizing that we cannot hire everyone who applies.

Is this a year-long position?
This position is only for the school year, starts in August and ends May.

Do the clubGEN leaders work during the summer?
Currently, there is not a summer clubgen leadership program, but we hope to have one soon.

If selected as a clubGEN leader, can I just work half of the school year and then play sports the other half?
No. We ask that you make a full school year commitment. The clubGEN leadership and professional development program is highly competitive and we encourage you to be sure and think about this requirement before engaging in employment.

I don’t have an email account, what should I do?
clubgen leaders are required to have a personal email account. We encourage applicants to learn more about signing up and maintaining a personal email account. There are several free email services i.e. Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.

Can I print and then fax in my completed application?
No, we are only accepting applications by email. We will not review applications received by fax or mail. We are trying to keep Texas beautiful by “going green” with the application process this year.

Do I need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader to download the PDF application?
Yes, you will need to have Adobe Reader installed on the computer you are using to fill out the application. You can download the software at Adobe.

How do I save the PDF file before emailing it in?
Please be sure to save a copy of the application on your desktop first. Use the following guide:
SAVE FILE AS: first, last name and school name in the title.
FOR EXAMPLE: firstname_lastname_schoolname.pdf (Lora_Alaniz_Austin.PDF)

Can I participate in other afterschool activities like sports, flag corps, cheer squad, dance, etc. if I am selected as a clubGEN leader?
