A High School Super Role Model

Jasmine Washington’s interest in working for GENaustin springs from her experiences with bullying and insecurities at a young age. “I find it an absolute blessing to be given the opportunity to help young girls that struggle with some of the same obstacles I had to face. GENaustin has helped me to discover who I am and has given me the opportunity to help others discover that as well,” Jasmine says.
Jasmine Washington came to GENaustin last year, ready to rise to the challenge of working with middle school girls each week as a clubGEN Leader. Jasmine’s dedication, energy and natural ability for working with youth immediately made her a stand-out Leader, and will be returning as a clubGEN Leader at Manor ISD during the 2010-2011 school year.
Outside of running clubGEN meetings, Jasmine is a Senior at Manor High School where she is a National Honor Society student, an Academic Silver Medalist winner, and earned a class rank of third out of over 200 students.
She has also participated in her school’s choir, dance team, and various community service projects.
Jasmine aims for a career as a Psychiatrist, and hopes to attend Texas Christian University. When she is not working for GENaustin or doing school work, she enjoys reading and writing short stories and poetry.
Congratulations on all of your accomplishments, Jasmine. We are glad to have you back!
GENuine Appreciation
On Saturday, May 22nd GENaustin hosted an end of the year “GENuine Appreciation” celebration at St. David’s Episcopal Church downtown, as a way to recognize and thank all of those involved in the success of GENaustin’s programs during the 2009-2010 school year. All clubGEN Leaders and their families were invited to attend, along with volunteers, board members, and contacts at schools that support GENaustin programs.
Two of GENaustin’s high school Leaders, Kirsten Leedall and Samantha Kraatz, received the Anita Benavides Mennucci Scholarship award and acted as keynote speakers for the ceremony, reading their award winning essays about how they have changed as a result of being a clubGEN Leader. (Link to essays?)
Also recognized at the event was Volunteer of the Year, Pat Kirkland. Ms. Kirkland is the founder of Skills to Success, and as a volunteer to the organization, has dedicated an enormous amount of time of her own research and knowledge to develop a curriculum that helps middle school girls build confidence and learn ways to deal with relational aggression.
Thank you again to all those who helped clubGEN reach over 900 girls at 24 Austin Central Texas middle schools during the past school year. We GENuinely appreciate you!
GENaustin's Phone Bank
GENaustin launched its first phone bank on Monday, April 26th that went through Thursday, April 29th. The clubGEN high school leaders reached out to previous donors to thank them for their backing and request further support to keep clubGEN open and free to next year’s middle school girls. Each leader has a personal goal of $2,500 as well as personalized online fundraising pages. The caller who raises the most money will receive a pair of ACL weekend passes! The clubGEN campus coordinators also got in on the action; making calls to the parents and guardians of their respective club members. This was a great opportunity for the campus coordinators to connect with the family and friends of the clubGEN members! Huge “Thank-Yous” to everyone who has supported GENaustin as well as all the people involved in making this wonderful week happen!
clubGEN Career Week
Career Week for clubGEN was held March 29th - April 1st. We were very excited to have many women from the community speaking at our after-school clubs throughout Austin, Round Rock, Del Valle, and Manor ISD! This was a special time for our club members to hear about different educational paths and careers as they are beginning to think more about their future. These women are excellent role models for all of the central Texas girls that we serve!

clubGEN Leaders Learn Important Financial Skills for the Future
On Saturday, March 27th , clubGEN high school leaders participated in their final workforce development workshop of the year. The girls learned financial literacy skills through a partnership with Junior Achievement (JA). Gloria Brown Oliver, a JA volunteer and local financial planner, presented on spending plans and identity theft. The girls engaged in lively discussions and games while exploring the many decisions they will make as they successfully manage their finances now and in the future. They also learned helpful tips on preventing identity theft. Many thanks to Junior Achievement and Gloria Brown Oliver for leading a valuable, engaging workshop.
GENaustin gives their continuous appreciation to The Ronald McDonald House for providing a beautiful space in which to hold our leadership trainings.
